Description:
The purpose of this document is to review ecological research conducted by scientists at the National Health and Environmental Research Laboratory (NHEERL) under the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) contribution to the US Global Change Research Program (USGCRP). The intent is to provide that information as reference material in the context of the needs and synthesis products identified in the recently published "Strategic Plan for the Climate Change Science Program" (CCSP 2003). This program has been implemented by the Office of Research and Development (ORD) in cooperation with various program offices within EPA?primarily the Office of Air and Radiation. The EPA has conducted research on global climate change through extramural projects such as grants and cooperative agreements, as well as through intramural research, which is research conducted directly by EPA scientists. This review focuses on the intramural research in an effort to highlight the expertise and contributions of federal scientists. To that end, the research summarized and the literature referenced are primarily the results of research performed at the NHEERL ecology divisions directly involving federal scientists. The primary objective, here, is to show the evolution of research in support of policy development at EPA, and secondarily to highlight the relationship of the research results and research needs in support of EPA's mission to protect the human health and the environment consistent with the most recent US Strategy for global change research (CCSP 2003).
