This manuscript is based in large part on an invited presentation. The manuscript provides a brief overview of the growing issue of the human-health and environmental impact of a variety of toxins of marine and freshwater origin, the current (generally crude) state of behavioral evaluations of the toxins, and the utility of contemporary test methods used in toxicology, pharmacology and neuroscience.
