Description:

The purpose of the Workshop was to begin a process by which the leaders of the Council for Chemical Research, industry, academia, and government focus on sustainability and devote substantial resources to advancing issues that will improve the sustainability of industry and society. The purpose was to provide an understanding of three major sustainability issues - Energy, Material Consumption, and Human Behavior - that are expected to have the highest impact on Industry, and to provide a diverse set of responsible and informed views and subsequent discussions that will help the participants understand the severity of the issues. From the Workshop it is expected that research and development programs and business opportunities that have a reasonable probability of occurrence and a high potential impact on sustainability will be identified. The Workshop included four invited plenary speakers covering the areas of sustainability and business, energy, material consumption, and human behavior. Three breakout sessions in the areas of energy, material consumption, and human behavior as they related to sustainability were held.
