Impact/Purpose:

USEPA NHEERL-WED scientists, in collaboration with staff from EPA Region 9, the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Nevada Natural Heritage Program, the USDA Forest Service, and the USDI Bureau of Land Management have refined and subdivided Level III ecological regions for the state of Nevada to create a more detailed Level IV ecoregion framework.

Description:

USEPA NHEERL-WED scientists, in collaboration with staff from EPA Region 9, the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Nevada Natural Heritage Program, the USDA Forest Service, and the USDI Bureau of Land Management have refined and subdivided Level III ecological regions for the state of Nevada to create a more detailed Level IV ecoregion framework. This ecoregion framework is methodologically consistent with those developed elsewhere by the U.S. EPA and allows biologists and resource managers to share and compare environmental data across political boundaries. In Nevada, the state and federal agencies intend to use the regional framework to help structure ecosystem research, assessment, monitoring, and resource management. The mapped ecoregions will assist the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection in their efforts to develop biological criteria and indices of condition for Nevada's water resources. The Natural Resources Conservation Service is using the ecoregion framework to reassess and complement the Major Land Resource Area system in Nevada. The US Geological Survey will publish the map and descriptions of Nevada ecoregions as part of a special map series. To date, 13 map/poster publications have been created for individual states or pairs of states. The front of the 34" X 44" large page format provides a map and descriptions with color photographs of typical landscapes, flora, and fauna. The back of the page contains a table of ecoregion attributes and a list of major references. In addition to being a product of an interagency effort to develop a common framework of ecological regions for the nation, the map will be available to a broad audience of scientists, educators and the general public.
