PERMANENCE OF BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL WARFARE AGENTS IN MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE LANDFILL LEACHATES

Citation:

DavisHoover*, W J. AND P. Koga. PERMANENCE OF BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL WARFARE AGENTS IN MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE LANDFILL LEACHATES. Presented at Air & Waste Management Association's 98th Annual Conference & Exhibition, Minneapolis, MN, June 21 - 24, 2005.

Impact/Purpose:

To inform the public.

Description:

The objective of this work is to permit EPA/ORD's National Homeland Security Research Center (NHSRC) and Edgewood Chemical Biological Center to collaborate together to test the permanence of biological and chemical warfare agents in municipal solid waste landfills. Research into the permanence of the final disposal of the inactivated or active agents of terrorism must be examined by looking at the fate of various agents in the most likely medium of escape. Fate will be determined by looking at the transport and the activation status of the agent. The mediums of escape from a landfill, according to likelihood, would be leachate, leachate discharge to POTW, air, groundwater, soil and waste. The agents of terrorism to be reviewed are most likely to be biological, and chemical. Laboratory studies of the fate of biological and chemical agents in landfill leachate are being initiated. Experimental design will be discussed.
