Citation:
Hutchins*, S R., E Striz*, AND N. Dorsey*. NITRATE CONTAMINATION OF GROUND WATER FROM LAND APPLICATION OF SWINE WASTE: CASE STUDY AND GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS. Presented at EPA/NRCS Water Quality Task Team, Ft. Worth, TX, July 09, 2003.
Impact/Purpose:
To inform the public.
Description:
Guidelines for land application of CAFO waste may not be sufficient to prevent ground water contamination by nitrate. A case study is presented illustrating the problem for one field site disposing of swine waste. Data are discussed in context with documented land application records at this site to determine whether the site practices followed general NRCS guidelines. These data are also discussed in comparison to general land application practices to identify problem areas where revisions to existing guidelines may be warranted.
