Impact/Purpose:
To inform the public.
Description:
The use of ionic liquids in various synthetic transformations is gaining significance due to the enhanced reaction rates, potential for recycling and compatibility with various organic compounds and organometallic catalysts. Palladium-catalyzed oxidation of styrene and other alkenes in the presence of various ionic liquids based on 1,3-dialkylimidazolium cation bearing different anions will be described. The effect of temperature, pressure, use of co-catalyst and recyclability aspects for the generation of carbonyl compounds (Wacker reaction) under air or oxygen atmosphere will be discussed.
