Description:
Selective oxidation of hydrocarbons is one of the very important and challenging areas in industrial chemistry due to the wide ranging utility of the resulting oxygenates in fine chemical synthesis. Most of the existing processes for their oxidations employ toxic and often stoichiometric oxidants eventually producing copious amounts of industrial waste. For this reason, new efficient catalytic methodologies using environmentally friendly oxidants such as molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide are very much desirable. Vanadium phosphorus oxide (VPO) is a highly efficient oxidation catalyst for n-butane
'dation to maleic anhydride. However, the potential of this catlyst for other
oxi hydrocarbon oxidations are not well exploited. We herein report the selective oxidation of various hydrocarbons over VPO catalysts using ecofriendly oxidant, aqueous hydrogen peroxide. The reaction is relatively mild and selective with no significant formation of any over oxidation products. An examination of the oxidation reaction vis-a-vis the physico-chemical properties of the catalyst reveals that a reversible V4+N5+ redox
mechanism is operating wherein V5+ acts as a dynamic oxidizing center.
