Description:

This study compares the efficacy of two in vitro, estrogen-sensitive bioassays to rank the "relative estrogenicity" of five natural, pharmaceutical and xenoestrogens with a newly developed in vivo bioassay. The E-SCREEN (MCF-7 tumor cells) and YES (Yeast Estrogen Screen) assays were used to rank estradiol-17B, ethynylestradiol, diethylstilbestrol, methoxychlor and nonyl phenol for their threshold activation and EC50 concentrations. Those rankings were compared with threshold and EC50 effects concentrations to induce vitellogenin synthesis in male sheepshead minnows exposed to those chemicals in a flow-through aqueous exposure. To eliminate any variability due to purity or compounding differences, test chemicals for all assays were from the same source.
