Description:
The transformation of CO2 an abundant greenhouse gas, into cyclic carbonates by coupling reaction with epoxides is receiving well-deserved attention. A series of imidazolium-based indium tetrahalides, prepared efficiently via microwave assisted reaction of InX3 with [1-R-3-methtlimidazolium]; Y, exhibit high activities for the coupling reaction of CO2 with a variety of epoxides; the corresponding cyclic carbonates are formed even at room temperature. The catalytic activity is greatly influenced by the nature of halides appended to the indium center. Various reaction parameters for this reaction will be presented including the spectroscopic studies to delineate the reaction pathway.
