Description:

Remote sensing as a science and as a paradigm was borne from the critical need for battlefield intelligence and grew and thrived as one of the fundamental cornerstones of national security. To a great extent, the development ofmany aspects and accepted principals of remote sensing have been, and continue to be developed behind the veil of security in the intelligence infrastructures ofmany of the nations of the world. However, with the widespread development of associated geospatial technologies, such as the Internet and Geographic Information Systems technology, along with a renaissance of new sensor development and technological advances, the world of remote sensing and all geospatial information, is changing dramatically. Remote sensing and security will no j longer be relegated to the intelligence community, but will be a fundamental part of a . new global perspective on nationality, environment, and sustainability.

Global security in the future will depend largely on cooperation, information sharing, sustainable development, and remediating an environmental legacy of industrialization, chemical, biological and nuclear warfare, and in building the, foundation of cooperation in management of shared natural resources and a global ecosystem.

This presentation will review the history of remote sensing in warfare, the development of 'earth observations' for peacetime, environmental research, and outline some of the emerging research and development activities that are likely to playa key role in the future security of the global community.
