Description:

Emission of ammonia from concentrated animal feeding operations represents an increasingly important environmental issue. Determination of total ammonia mass emission flux from extended area sources such as waste lagoons and waste effluent spraying operations can be evaluated using multi-beam path integrated optical absorption spectroscopy combined with vertically oriented radial plume mapping (VRPM) analysis. The use of open path Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (OP-FTIR) and VRPM to assess fugitive emissions has been well established by U.S. EPA. Recently, a multibeam tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) system has been used in conjunction with VPRM to determine the ammonia mass emission flux from a hog waste effluent field spraying operation. This paper describes the new multibeam TDLAS measurement system and reports results from a spraying operation.
