Impact/Purpose:

To inform the public.

Description:

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Water Supply and Water Resources Division in partnership with the consulting firm of CDM to redevelop and modernize the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). In the initial phase of this project EPA rewrote SWMM's computational engine using an object-based approach, provided the program with a rudimentary graphical user interface, and produced complete documentation of the program and its code. The project proceeded under a quality assurance project plant (QAPP) designed to result in a product that will produce results similar to the existing version of SWMM. The computational engine will be utilized by NERL's Multi-media Integrated Modeling Systems (MIMS) researchers investigating the role of urban storm water in a multimedia framework. Future work will focus on improving key computational components within SWMM and enhancing SWMM's ability to model BMP and LID alternatives. The latest version of the updated SWMM can be downloaded from www.epa.gov/ednnrmrl/swmm.
