Impact/Purpose:

To inform the public.

Description:

Safe drinking water is critical to protecting human health. More than 260 million Americans rely on the safety of tap water provided by water systems that comply with national drinking water standards. EPA's strategy for ensuring safe drinking water includes four key elements, one of which is "developing or revising drinking water standards." The EPA Strategic Plan (see Peer Review website) identifies Objective 2.3 under the Goal of Clean Safe Water as "enhanced science and research needed to conduct leading edge research on the problems associated with improving drinking water quality." The objectives of the research are to provide information and expertise to the regulatory agencies responsible for revising the rules, while also providing quality data and interpretation that can benefit utilities that have to implement the rules. This presentation will cover the Water Supply and Water Resources Division's research for regulated contaminants in drinking waters. Specifically, the DBP, Cryptosporidium, copper, lead, and arsenic projects will be addressed.
