MANAGEMENT OF COMBINED SEWER OVERFLOW RESEARCH PROGRAM CAPSTONE

Citation:

Field*, R AND A Tafuri*. MANAGEMENT OF COMBINED SEWER OVERFLOW RESEARCH PROGRAM CAPSTONE. Presented at WSWRD Peer Review, Cincinnati, OH, September 17 - 26, 2004.

Impact/Purpose:

To inform the public.

Description:

Combined-sewer overflow (CSO) is a mixture of urban storm drainage, municipal-industrial wastewater, and subterranean infiltration. Untreated discharges of CSOs have caused substantial pollution impacts on the quality of receiving-water bodies. Problem constituents include visible matter, infectious microorganisms, oxygen-demanding materials, suspended solids, nutrients, heavy metals, pesticides, and petroleum hydrocarbons.

A national research program in urban wet-weather flow management and pollution control has been ongoing since the mid-1960s. The early program was initiated by the U.S. Public Health Service. The program is now managed by the U.S. EPA, ORD, National Risk Management Research Laboratory. Over the past 35 years, the program has sponsored approximately 300 projects that have resulted in approximately 700 technical publications on CSO pollution identification, management, and control.

A Research Program Capstone document has been completed and is available in hard-copy from Lewis Publishers, A CRC Press Company. The book is a reference for the user community faced with the challenges and mandates associated with urban wet-weather-induced water pollution. It covers the gamut of engineering requirements, from pollution problem assessment and associated tools to management and control planning and design. It is an important survey of control and treatment technologies for CSOs, and encompasses the U.S. EPA Urban Wet-Weather Flow Management and Pollution Control Research Program's efforts, as well as those of other research over the last 35 years. Material is presented on source management and control technologies, treatment and solids management, disinfection, and effective control systems. This poster is an overview of the capstone document presenting information on the CSO problem and the various alternatives available to address the problem
