Description:
The Environmental Technology Verification report discusses the technology and performance of the Parametric Emissions Monitoring System (PEMS) manufactured by ANR Pipeline Company, a subsidiary of Coastal Corporation, now El Paso Corporation. The PEMS predicts carbon doixide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), total hydrocarbons (THCs), oxygen (O2), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions from an engine based on normally measured engine operating parameters as determined by existing sensors. The test engine was an Ingersoll-Rand model KVR-606, 16 cylinder, 6000 hp reciprocating engine, which was "mapped" by the PEMS manufacturer to determine the relationships between engine operating conditions and emissions. The PEMS relative accuracies of NOx, CO, and CO2 emission predictions were 11.1%, 3.9%, and 6.8%, respectively, which are all within the 20% acceptance criterion for conventional continuous emissions monitoring systems. The relative accuracy for predicting THCs was 34.2%, which is likely related to the 34% difference observed between the manufacturer's sampling system and that used by the verification testing organization.
