HYDRO-KLEEN FILTRATION SYSTEM, 03/07/WQPC-SWP, SEPTEMBER 2003. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, DC, EPA/600/R-03/112, 2003.

Description:

Verification testing of the Hydro-Kleen(TM) Filtration System, a catch-basin filter designed to reduce hydrocarbon, sediment, and metals contamination from surface water flows, was conducted at NSF International in Ann Arbor, Michigan. A Hydro-Kleen(TM) system was fitted into a testing rig designed to simulate a catch basin. The testing rig was equipped with meters, feeders and pumps to monitor and deliver synthetic challenge water impacted with petroleum hydrocarbons, sediments, surfactants, and automotive fluids at flow rates up to 135 gallons per minute. During each test phase, influent and treated effluent samples were collected and analyzed to assess the treatment capability of the Hydro-Kleen(TM) system, and influent and treatment flow data was recorded to assess the system's hydraulic capacity. The testing consisted of six test phases with specific influent flow rates and contaminant concentrations. The tests were designed to determine the hydraulic capacity, treatment efficiency, and filter media blinding or bypass characteristics of the system. In addition to the performance characteristics of the system, factors such as ease of installation and maintenance were evaluated.
