Description:

Verification testing of the ADS 3600 Area/Velocity Flow Monitor was conducted by EPA's Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Program at the Utah Water Research Laboratory (UWRL) in Logan, Utah, and a Quebec Urban Community (QUC) test site in Sainte-Foy, Quebec, Canada. The ADS 3600 was installed in pipes measuring 10, 20 and 42 inches in diameter at the UWRL test site, and in a 41.7-inch diameter combined sewage interceptor pipe at the QUC test site. Both sites were equipped with flow control and reference flow monitoring devices to gauge the deviation of the ADS-calculated flow from the reference flow across a variety of free flow and back flow conditions. At the UWRL test site, the average ADS-calculated deviation from reference flow was 2.6 percent during free flow conditions, 5.8 percent during back flow conditions, and 4.5 percent for all data. At the QUC test site, the average ADS-calculated deviation from the reference flow was -5.7 percent for all data, and 2.1 percent for the data set where outliers less than -100 percent or greater than 100 percent were eliminated (the manufacturer noted that outliers are routinely removed from the data set during post-monitoring data editing). The equipment was durable and easy to install, with no special tools required. The flow meter equipment required minimal O&M throughout the duration of testing. The ultrasonic sensors and stainless steel band are designed with a very thin hydraulic profile that did not promote accumulation of debris during testing. The two computer programs required to operate the flow meter and retrieve the data were relatively easy to learn, and the procedure to collect data was simple and efficient.
