VIBRIO VULNIFICUS EDUCATION WORKSHOP FOR THE FLORIDA MEDICAL COMMUNITY

Impact/Purpose:

The objective of this project is to inform the professional medical practitioners licensed by the State of Florida about the risks posed by the marine bacteria, Vibrio vulnificus, to people whose immune systems are compromised by liver disease, chemotherapy, etc.

Description:

Vibrio vulnificus is a naturally occurring microorganism that occurs warm marine and estuarine waters. The bacteria are concentrated by filter feeding shellfish. Certain immunocompromised individuals and those with liver disease can be adversely, even fatally affected by Vibrio vulnificus after consuming raw or undercooked oysters. The objective of this project is to inform the professional medical practitioners licensed by the State of Florida about the risks posed by the marine bacteria, Vibrio vulnificus, to people whose immune systems are compromised by liver disease, chemotherapy, etc. Workshop attendees will be encouraged to provide proper counseling to patients to avoid eating raw oysters.
