Description:

In order to screen large numbers of chemicals for their potential to produce developmental neurotoxicity new, in vitro methods are needed. One approach is to develop methods based on the biologic processes which underlie brain development including the growth and maturation of cells in the nervous system. This manuscript examined procedures for assessing neuronal growth and maturation in vitro. Protein markers which tracked the normal growth of neurons were identified. Chemical perturbation of neuronal growth was reflected in a decrease in the protein markers. These proteins may be useful as a rapid screen for changes in neuronal development.
