DEVELOPING TOOLS FOR MONITORED NATURAL RECOVERY OF PCB-CONTAMINATED SEDIMENTS AT LAKE HARTWELL, SC

Citation:

Mills*, M A. DEVELOPING TOOLS FOR MONITORED NATURAL RECOVERY OF PCB-CONTAMINATED SEDIMENTS AT LAKE HARTWELL, SC. Presented at EPA Environmental Research Seminar, Atlanta, GA, September 28, 2004.

Impact/Purpose:

To inform the public.

Description:

Contaminated sediments pose a risk to human health and the environment . The management of this risk is currently limited practically to three technologies: dredging, capping, and natural recovery. Monitored natural recovery relies on the natural burial and removal mechanisms to mitigate the risk of the contaminant in-place with adequate monitoring to assure the risk is being reduced over time. The research presented shows tools that being developed with EPA's Office of Research and Development to evaluate monitored natural recovery and understand fundamental mechanisms associated with the fate of PCBs in sediments.
