This manuscript examines the neurotoxic potential of a commonly found disinfection by-product (DBP), dibromoacetic acid (DBA). While the Safe Drinking Water Act requires evaluation of DBPs for noncancer health effects, surprisingly few have been tested for neurotoxicity. Rats exposed for 6 months to DBA in their drinking water displayed neuromuscular and sensorimotor toxicity along with neuropathological changes in the spinal cord. These studies suggest that neurotoxicity should be considered in the overall hazard evaluation of haloacetic acids.
