To inform the public.

Description:

The USEPA is developing a Computer Aided Process Engineering (CAPE) software tool for the metal finishing industry that helps users design efficient metal finishing processes that are less polluting to the environment. Metal finishing process lines can be simulated and evaluated to determine the quantity of pollutants released using on-screen flowsheets. These are used to identify processes that reduce the amount of waste generated. The processes represented on flowsheets are created from a large collection of unit operations commonly used in the metal finishing industry. The user builds processes by selecting icons that represent the unit operations from a toolbar and drag and drop these icons onto the flowsheet. The path of the material streams connecting unit operations are drawn on the design surface with the computer mouse. The final step of the analysis is to optimize the metal finishing process to minimize the amount of waste produced per item.
