MIKE'S ISLAND, PHASE 1: BASELINE ASSESSMENTS AND DEVELOPMENT OF A COMMUNITY RESTORATION PLAN

Impact/Purpose:

The TNC has begun a multi-phase project at Mike's Island, Mississippi to form a basis for significant dialogue between the TNC, County residents, and the timber and sand&gravel industries. This project is the first phase of the multi-phase project and will develop a community restoration plan that will serve as an opportunity for broad based community participation in an Gulf Ecological Management Site(GEMS).

Description:

The primary objective of this project is to develop a conceptual restoration plan for the Mike's Island area. The plan will establish goals to improve the ecological integrithy of the lower Pearl River and address several key issues such as invasive speices management, erosion control and rememdiation, and reforestation. The final conceptual plan will include TNC restoration action as well as recommended appropriate community partnerships.
