Determine the potential of selected algal toxins to induce developmental toxicity in the mammal and amphibian.

Description:

The Office of Water is responsible for regulating waterborne pathogens and chemicals in drinking water. Algal toxins are present in some water sources but their reproductive risks are undetermined. Therefore, Algal toxins are being examined for potential developmental toxicity in mammals and amphibians.

Status :Ongoing. Microcystin was tested and found not to be teratogenic. Anatoxin-a was tested and a paper is in preparation. Cylindrospermopsin study is underway.
