CITIZENS WATER QUALITY MONITORING & MARINE HABITAT ENHANCEMENT PROJECT

Impact/Purpose:

1) Plant 9,000 marsh grass plants along Bayou Lafourches banks, the regions hurricane protection levees, and the marshlands surrounding Bayou Lafourche, thereby enhancing coastal areas and marine habitat. These plantings will be designed to simultaneously raise community awareness about land loss and activate community groups to become better environmental stewards.

2) Expand the Citizens Water Quality Monitoring of Bayou Lafourche from one monthly monitoring session and location to at least four monthly monitoring and locations. Again, the monitoring will be designed to simultaneously raise community awareness about water quality and to activate community groups to become better environmental stewards.

3) Increase regional environmental awareness and stewardship as evidenced by a 25% increase in Les Reflections du Bayous membership, by a 25% increase in coverage of environmental issues by three forms of local media newspaper, television, and radio, and by the involvement on monitoring and planting projects of 10 community groups that have previously not participated in environmental stewardship efforts.
