SUBMERGED AQUATIC VEGETATION GARDENING MX974861

Impact/Purpose:

The Mobile Bay NEP, the Alabama Department of Environmental Management - Coastal Programs, and the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, State Lands - Coastal Section, have partnered to develop and implement a volunteer Submerged Aquatic Vegetation Gardening Program and create a SAV gardening manual. The objectives are to: 1) acquire the seed/seedlings fo the SAVs for planting; 2) create the SAV gardening guide; and 3) create SAV plots at volunteers water front properties.

Description:

The Submerged Aquatic Vegetation Gardening project will acquire the seed/seedlings of SAVs for planting, will create an SAV gardening guide; and will create SAV plots at volunteers waterfront properties. Volunteers will gather data on plant size and spacing. Water quality test kits will also be given to volunteers to monitor water quality including dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature and turbidity. Each volunteer may not receive a kit but the kits will be spaced so the water will be tested each one to two miles of shoreline. The data collected on water quality will be submitted to Alabama Water Watch and to the MBNEP Data and Information Management System. Data will be released to the public upon completion of the project, which is expected to last up to five years. The project will also increase regional environmental awareness and stewardship.
