CORRELATING METAL SPECIATION IN SOILS TO RISK

Citation:

Scheckel*, K G. CORRELATING METAL SPECIATION IN SOILS TO RISK. Presented at Annual Advanced Photon Source Users Meeting, Chicago, IL, May 03 - 06, 2004.

Impact/Purpose:

To inform the public.

Description:

Understanding bioavailability of metals from exposure to contaminated soils is a challenging aspect of environmental research. This presentation will examine three areas of research with respect to metal speciation in soils as it relates to bioavailability: 1) Pb immobilization at a smelter-contaminated site via phosphate amendments, 2) metal speciation and distribution in biosolids amended soils, and 3) thallium hyperaccumulation in Iberis spp. The discussion will explore the successes of synchrotron-based research and how the results are advancing new knowledge and research in these areas.
