Impact/Purpose:

Information.

Description:

Interim report resulting from a cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) between US EP A's Officeof Research and Development - National Risk Management Research Laboratory and a n ongoing field demonstration
of municipal waste landfills being operated as bioreactors. Bioreactors are designed to rapidly stabilize the waste mass
inside the landfill by controlled use of liquids and air. The technique is underway at a new landfill and has been
retrofitted at an existing landfill. Landfill gas, solids and leachate parameters are being monitoired and interim results
are reported here with the aim of assessing the effective and safe use of this operational technique at future bioreactor
landfills.
