Description:
A number of species of anuran amphibians from different regions across North America have recently exhibited an increased occurrence of, predominantly, hind limb malformations. Research concerning factors potentially responsible for these malformations has focused extensively on three stressors: chemical contaminants, solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and parasitic trematodes. This review assesses recent work with each of these three stressors in the context of their plausibility in contributing to the malformations observed in field-collected amphibians.
