AlAbed*, S R. AND Y. Fang**. EFFECTS OF REACTOR CONDITIONS ON ELECTROCHEMICAL DECHLORINATION OF TRICHLOROETHYLENE USING GRANULAR-GRAPHITE ELECTRODE. 227th American Chemical Society National Meeting, Anaheim, CA, March 28 - April 01, 2004.

Impact/Purpose:

To evaluate the effects of pH, current, electrolyte type, and flow rate on TCE, dechlorination rate.

Description:

Trichloroethylene (TCE) was electrochemically dechlorinated in aqueous environments using granular graphite cathode in a mixed reactor. Effects of pH, current, electrolyte type, and flow rate on TCE dechlorination rate were evaluated. TCE dechlorination rate constant and gas production were proportional to applied current in both solutions. TCE dechlorination rates were similar at pH7 and pH 4 in 0.1 N ammonium acetate solution and both had similar gas production. At pH 10 slower dechlorination rate was observed and lower gas production and dechlorination. TCE dechlorination in ammonium acetate under three flow rates exhibited similar overall dechlorination rate constant but different gas production. Lower flow rate resulted in higher gas production. Product distributions as well as current effici8ency during TCE dechlorination under various conditions will also be discussed.
