Description:
Storage can be an effective means of stabilizing small quantities of wastewater sludge. This paper summarizes the performance of two laboratory-scale sludge storage units and that of four full-scale tanks sampled at four treatment facilities in eastern Nebraska. The bench-scale units consisted of one aerated tank and one non-aerated tank; both of which were intermittently mixed and stored for a period of six months. The degree to which these systems reduced volatile solids and pathogenic organisms was measured. Only the non-aerated unit achieved Class A pathogen reduction requirements in terms of fecal coliform and VSS reductions. Three of the four storage tanks at the treatment facilities achieved the Class B pathogen reduction requirements and one plant nearly achieved the Class A requirements. With increased solids retention times, these sludge storage tanks may be able to produce a more stabilized end-product that meets Class A requirements.
