Kolanczyk, R C. AND P. K. Schmieder. RATE AND CAPACITY OF HEPATIC MICROSOMAL RING HYDROXYLATION OF PHENOL TO HYDROQUINONE AND CATECHOL IN RAINBOW TROUT (ONCORHYNCHUS MYKISS). TOXICOLOGY 176:77-90, (2002).

Description:

Rainbow trout liver microsomes were used to study the rate of ring-hydroxylation of phenol (PH) by directly measuring the production of hydroquinone (HQ), the primary metabolite, and catechol (CAT), a secondary metabolite. An HPLC method with integrated ultroviolet (UV) and electrochemical detection (ECD) was used for metabolite identification and quantification at low concentrations. - - -

These experiments provide a means to directly quantify metabolic bioactivation potential in fish species. This work initiates a series of studies to compare activation rate and capacity across aquatic species, providing a basis for the prediction of metabolic pathways and rates.
