Description:

The UNEP/ILO/WHO International Programme on Chemical Safety (IPCS), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) have developed a collaborative partnership to foster integration of assessment approaches to evaluate human health and ecological risks. Recognizing the need to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of risk assessments globally, the objectives of this effort include: ensuring better understanding of the benefits of integration, understanding the obstacles that might be encountered in the integration process, and influencing key agencies, organizations, and scientific societies to promote discussion of integration. In 2000, a framework document for integrated risk assessment (IRA) developed as part of this effort underwent international peer review. The concepts and approaches communicated in the framework have also been evaluated in an international workshop that took place in Ispra, Italy in April 2001, sponsored by the European Commission (EC) and IPCS. Workshop participants were asked to identify the benefits and obstacles to IRA using four illustrative case studies, and to identify research needs and mechanisms to facilitate implementation of IRA internationally. This presentation will summarize the results, recommendations, and outcomes of the workshop.
