SITE DEMONSTRATION CAPSULE --MATCON MODIFIED ASPHALT FOR WASTE CONTAINMENT

Citation:

Tetra Tech EM Inc. SITE DEMONSTRATION CAPSULE --MATCON MODIFIED ASPHALT FOR WASTE CONTAINMENT. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, DC, EPA/540/R-03/505a, 2004.

Impact/Purpose:

Informatrion

Description:

MatCon is a polymer modified asphalt material designed specifically for waste contaminment applications. The modifications to the material differentiate it from conventional paving asphalt by minimizing the damaging effects of environmental exposure that could detract from the desired engineering properties of conventional asphalt regarding its use as a containment material. In this SITE demonstration, the material was used as a containment landdfill cap. In both installations, the cover was specified in the Superfund record of decision as an asphalt cover because the cover was to serve a dual purpose: to minimize infiltrating water while serving as a landfill cap, and secondly, to serve as a parking facility. Installations report in this document was conducted at Dover AFB, Dover, DE and a Waste Management Site in Elgin, IL. Installations were observed and monitored, and this is coupled with robust engineerin analysis of samples remvoed from the installations and evaluated in the laboratory. This report summarizes the finding of the demonstration.
