ESTIMATING REPRODUCTIVE SUCCESS IN BIRDS

Citation:

Etterson, M A. ESTIMATING REPRODUCTIVE SUCCESS IN BIRDS. Presented at Biology Department Seminar, University of Minnesota-Duluth, Duluth, MN, February 6, 2004.

Description:

This presentation will focus on the statistical issues surrounding estimation of avian nest-survival. I first describe the natural history and breeding ecology of two North American songbirds, the Loggerhead Shrike (Lanius ludovicianus) and the Wood Thrush (Hylocichla mustelina). Then I describe several techniques we have developed for improving estimates of nest-survival, and finally, conclude with implications for experimental design and population modeling. The talk is aimed at an undergraduate audience and is designed to give them some insight into the relationship between statistical power and the conclusions that can be drawn from demographic studies.
