Description:

In December 2000, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) announced its intent to regulate mercury emissions from coal-fired electric utility steam generating plants. Maximum achievable control technology (MACT) requirements are to be proposed by December 2003 and finalized in 2004. Utilities are scheduled to comply with the MACT regulations by December 2007. This report provides information on the status of mercury emissions control technologies and is based primarily on research sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. EPA, and the Electric Power Research Institute. Five chapters cover the topics: Overview, Measurement of Mercury, Mercury Speciation and Capture by Adsorption, Mercury Speciation and Capture in Wet FGD Systems, and Conclusions. The overview chapter provides a summary of the report, EPA-600/R-01-109, April 2002, "Control of Mercury Emissions from Coal-Fired Electric Utility Boilers: Interim Report Including Errata Dated 3-21-02." The remainder of the report provides an update of information that has been published since the publication of EPA's April 2002 interim report.
