EPA: ORGANIZATION AND PROGRAMS

Citation:

Jewell*, K. EPA: ORGANIZATION AND PROGRAMS. Presented at ECU Environmental Science Department, Ada, OK, 10/10/2003.

Description:

I have been asked to speak to East Central University's Environmental Science Department about a research topic or topics. I have spoken briefly to classes there before regarding the progress of my career since graduating. This time it will be a little more extensive since I will be speaking for about 45 minutes. I will begin with a brief overview of the EPA's structure with regard to how the regions are laid-out across the country. I will show the various offices and emphasize the Office of Research and Development. I will then focus on Kerr lab and what I do here. I will talk about the stream restoration project that I worked on in Baltimore including some of the negative effects of urban run off. I plan to speak about the work that I did at Lake Texoma and some of the stressor zones that we identified for that project. I will give a brief description of natural attenuation and explain why we chose it over traditional clean-up methods. I will talk about my work with aerial photography and show some examples of its uses. I will finish by mentioning the work we do with permeable reactive barriers, Brownfields, and constructed wetlands. Basically, I want to give the students, who have little or no idea what we do, a good idea of some of the work going on in the environmental world that will be available to them after graduation.
