Description:

The recently promulgated Arsenic Rule will require that many new drinking water systems treat their water to remove arsenic. It has been projected that the State of Ohio will have nearly 140 community and non-community non-transient water systems in violation of the Rule. As a general observation, most sites in Ohio that have arsenic in their source water also have iron in their water. As a result, arsenic treatment at these sites will most likely be accomplished by installing iron removal treatment or optimizing current iron removal treatment practices. This talk reviews fundamental arsenic chemistry relationships and arsenic treatment options, and focuses on discussing iron removal as a means of achieving arsenic removal. Ways to modify current iron removal practices to improve arsenic removal are also addressed.
