HABITAT FRAGMENTATION CUMULATIVE IMPACT SCREENING ANALYSIS

Citation:

Impact/Purpose:

A Geographic Information System (GIS) based landuse evaluations to assess habitat disruptions from linear construction projects.

Description:

Region 6 EPA uses a GIS screening system to evaluate specific areas and construction projects within our five states. The methodology evaluates disruptions to landscape through evaluation of wildlife habitat quantity and quality, endangered species, surface and groundwater vulnerability, and the potential for fragmentation of identified wildlife habitats. The tool is primarily used for NEPA projects but is also used for enforcement targeting. The present review included an example highway construction project from Tuttle, Oklahoma to Mustang, Oklahoma (OSU project completed 4/28/00, "NEPA Cumulative Impact Screening Evaluation of Habitat Fragmentation".
