DEVELOPMENT OF A COAST-WIDE MONITORING PLAN FOR ASSESSING HEALTH OF SEAGRASS HABITAT

Citation:

Impact/Purpose:

The Texas Seagrass Conservation Plan published in 1999, recommended that Texas resource agencies and research institutions work to establish a coast wide seagrass monitoring program. This project will produce a coastwide plan to be used by those agencies to determine the condition of the seagrass.

Description:

The development of a monitoring program to assess the health of Texas seagrass systems will be coordinated by Texas Parks and Wildlife and will address several major monitoring objective: 1) Define key indicators that describe seagrass habitat health and quality. 2) Identify the relationship between water and sediment quality parameters and seagrass productivity or habitat changes such that predictions can be made for conservation, management, and restoration applications. 3) Establish a coordinated sampling program with approved protocols to collect monitoring data that would be compiled into a distributed data management system for ready access by resource managers and others.
