DETECTING HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOMS IN LOUISIANA COASTAL WATERS -

Citation:

Impact/Purpose:

This project will do in situ monitoring of HABs and water quality parameters with the intent of providing useful cause and effect information about the occurrence and locations of blooms within the area. In the Lake Salvadore area of the Barataria Bay, just southwest of New Orleans, Mississippi River water will be diverted into this area, with high nitrate concentrations and sediment loads, as well as lower salinity. It is hoped that this river water will renourish and rebuild wetlands in the area that are degrading and disappearing. This same water may cause conditions more favorable to algal blooms, some of which are harmful.
