NRMRL-CIN-1496A Rochon*, G., Szlag*, D., Daniel*, F.B., and Chifos**, C. Remote Sensing Applications for Sustainable Watershed Management and Food Security. Proceedings of the 21st European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories Symposium, Marne-La-Valle, France, 5/14-16/2001. Begni, G. (Ed.), Lisse, Netherlands: A.A. Balkema Publishers 2002, 285-291. EPA/600/A-02/009. 06/14/2001 The integration of IKONOS satellite data, airborne color infrared remote sensing, visualization, and decision support tools is discussed, within the contexts of management techniques for minimizing non-point source pollution in inland waterways, such s riparian buffer restoration, and of strategies for food crop production sustainability, in an array of ecosystems. Case studies include the Little Miami River Watershed, Ohio; The Barataria Basin and Fayou Sauvage, LA; and Sudan's Gezira. The investigation's objectives are to ascertain the utility of environmental decision support, informed by archival satellite data visualization and alternative future scenarios generation, and to explore site-specific sensitivity of such technologies, in support of inter-generationally prudent management of watersheds and sustainable regional food security. Follow-on collaborative research with European counterparts (e.g., Foundation for Research & Technology-Hellas (FORTH), Crete, Greece) is planned to include enhancement, hardening, environmental technology verification, and field deployment of the prototype Temporal Analysis, Reconnaissance and Decision Integration System (TARDIS).
