MULTI-ANALYTE CHEMISTRY METHODS FOR PESTICIDES WHICH ARE ACETOLACTATE SYNTHASE (ALS) INHIBITORS IN SOIL

Citation:

Impact/Purpose:

Provide peer verified methods for analyzing residues of acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors at low ppb concentration levels in soils. Intended users are EPA laboratories , state FIFRA laboratories, and others. This is the second phase of an incremental effort. The first phase involved analytical methods for ALS inhibitors in water. This phase will identify methods for the same chemicals in soil.

Description:

A joint EPA/state/industry working group has developed several multi-analyte methods to analyze soils for low ppb (parts per billion) levels of herbicides (such as sulfonylureas, imidazolinones, and sulfonamides) that are acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors and may cause phytotoxic effects to non-target crops/plants. These methods utilize state-of-the-art instrumental techniques such as high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)/mass spectrometry (MS), capillary electrophoresis (CE)/ultraviolet (UV) detector, and CE/MS. The working group decided to peer validate, or verify the methods ultimately by having state FIFRA laboratories perform peer verifications using AOAC standardized laboratory peer verification procedures.
