ATMOSPHERIC HEALTH EFFECTS FRAMEWORK (AHEF) MODEL

Citation:

Impact/Purpose:

Used to evaluate the human health effects of stratospheric ozone depletion.

Description:

The Atmospheric and Health Effects Framework (AHEF) is used to assess theglobal impacts of substitutes for ozone-depleting substances (ODS). The AHEF is a series of FORTRAN modeling modules that collectively form a simulation framework for (a) translating ODS production into emissions over time using release profiles for different end-uses, (b) forecasting changes in equivalent effective stratospheric ozone concentrations based on those future emissions, (c) estimating the resulting changes in ground-level UV exposures, and (d) predicting changes in future skin cancer and cataract incidence and skin cancer mortality based on increased UV exposure.
