ESTIMATED SAVINGS IN MEDICAL COSTS RESULTING FROM ASTHMA MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS

Impact/Purpose:

The purpose of this project is to estimate the direct medical costs of asthma to HMOs and health insurers.

Description:

The purpose of this project is to estimate the direct medical costs of asthma to HMOs and health insurers. The study will estimate full medical costs and the subset of these full medical costs that is borne by HMOs/insurers. Next, the study will estimate the potential savings to HMOs/insurers from incorporating environmental controls and/or asthma management plans. This study takes a cost-of-illness approach coupled with health care utilization data to estimate the costs of asthma to HMOs and health insurers. To estimate the potential savings to HMOs/insurers from incorporating environmental controls in their asthma management practices, a modeling approach will be used. This modeling is exploratory in nature, and will develop alternative scenarios of health care utilization based on the effects of incorporating environmental controls and based on the literature on their impact on asthma endpoints.
