URANIUM MINING TENORM TECHNICAL REPORT - VOLUME I

Citation:

Impact/Purpose:

Characterize industry processes and occurrence of TENORM wastes generated by uranium mining, as well as mine reclamation methods and regulatory agency overview. Based on reviewers' comments received on drafts of the reports as well as future meetings with stakeholders, the Agency will make a determination on what further steps may be necessary for the purpose of radiation protection from this source of waste material.

Description:

The intent of this effort is to publish a series of individual reports, using a consistent approach, on industries that makes use of or produces TENORM waste. The first three products of this effort will be a URANIUM MINE LOCATION DATABASE, included in the Science Inventory as a separate entry, and a pair of documents entitled TECHNOLOGICALLY ENHANCED NATURALLY OCCURRING RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS FROM URANIUM MINING, VOLS I & II. Vol. I examines the occurrence of uranium in its natural settings in the United States, its industrial uses, and the methods employed over the last century to extract it from ore deposits. In addition, it explores the nature of solid and liquid wastes generated by the extraction methods, and the various remediation methods which can environmentally restore the extraction site. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) field studies are used in both reports, providing examples of current conditions of abandoned and remediated mines.
