ST. REGIS MOHAWKS - ASTHMA INTERVENTIONS

Impact/Purpose:

This project will provide information on asthma interventions, for both clinical and environmental interventions to families in the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe. This data will be useful to compare some important environmental exposures with those for groups whose environmental asthma has been more thoroughly studied.

Description:

This grant is to both support the St. Regis Mohawk's budding indoor air quality program and to provide resources for the Mohawks to work collaboratively with SUNY School of Public Health (see "Allergen Levels in Homes of Native Americans" above). In the study of asthma prevalence that was done on this population by SUNY, it appeared that in fact, while prevalence in all age groups was rising, it rose most markedly in the oldest age group, 75 years and above. The Mohawks will conduct a questionnaire and dust sampling protocol identical to the one SUNY is doing, but will do it in the homes of this older population of asthmatics, whereas SUNY will conduct their protocol in the homes of asthmatic children. Dust samples were collected last year; however, they will be analyzed by John's Hopkins instead of SUNY. Results are expected in the winter of 02.
