REGULATORY AIR QUALITY MODELS

Impact/Purpose:

Provide state-of-art air quality models to support regulatory programs for PSD, NSR, and SIPs

Description:

Appendix W to 40CFR Part 51 (Guideline on Air Quality Models) specifies the models to be used for purposes of permitting, PSD, and SIPs. Through a formal regulatory process this modeling guidance is periodically updated to reflect current science. In the most recent action, three new models, i.e., AERMOD, PRIME, and CALPUFF, are being considered for regulatory approval. These models were all previously submitted to performance evaluations and peer review. Final promulgation was in FY-06. This activity is support by an internet website (SCRAM), periodic workshops and training courses, the Model Clearinghouse in coordination with EPA Regional Offices, outreach to the scientific community on model evaluation issues, and participation in EPA's Council on Regulatory Environmental Models.
