RADIATION SITES TECHNICAL WORKGROUP

Impact/Purpose:

A Regional workgroup to promote exchange of technical information and practical experience in the areas of health and radiation site cleanup. It is a means of communication between Regional radiation staff and a resource for Regional training needs regarding radiation science and site issues.

Description:

Much of the radiation expertise in EPA is located in the Region Offices. The EPA Radiation Sites Technical Workgroup is an interoffice technical workgroup within EPA which provides a focal point for radiation expertise. The Workgroup has members from each region, as well as the EPA National Air and Radiation Laboratory (NAREL) and includes all the professionally-certified physicists within EPA. The objectivesof the worksgroup include: providing a national forum for discussing Regional raditation issues, keeping members informed regarding the state of the science for evaluating risks due to radiological contamination, promoting consistency in raditaion risk assessments, addressing site-specific concerns pertaining to radiation risk assessment and management, and supporting development, review, and distribution of analytical tools for addressing radiation problems. Products may include implementation case-studies, issues papers, technical papers, fact sheets and information in other formats. Formed in 2001, the Workgroup is currently evaluating potential products for its initial efforts, including a regional case-study sourcebook for Regional radiation staff and a radiation roadmap information resource for Superfund RPMs and OSCs.
